Song of the day

Posted: September 2, 2011 in J.C. Personal

Today’s musical offering helped to wake me up this morning on the way in. I’m talking about the 1989, Grammy nominated, “Kickstart My Heart” by Motley Crüe. Originally released in November of 1989 on the Dr. Feelgood album, Kickstart My Heart has been used to close Crüe shows on the past few tours. Reaching 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song employs what is known as a Floyd Rose Bridge trick that sounds like a motorcycle shifting gears. This is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”.

The song was written by Nikki Sixx and is about the time (one of many) he overdosed on heroin and was declared clinically dead for two minutes, only to be revived with the use of two adrenaline shots to the heart. Legend says the paramedic was a Crüe fan and didn’t want one of his favorite musicians to die. The incident took place in the hotel room of Saul Hudson, who you probably know better as Guns N’ Roses axe slinger Slash. Slash had nothing to do with the incident, though. If you would like to read more about the incident, check out The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rockstar.

There’s not a lot to this song with lyrics like “Always got the cops coming after me, Custom built bike doing 103. My heart, my heart, kickstart my heart”. The high energy and backstory are what helped make this song a hit, not the lyrics.

Sixx eventually traded the drugs he injected for the adrenaline of a show. Still a member of Motley Crüe, Sixx has held a position in several other bands including Brides of Destruction and his current second band Sixx: A.M. Sixx also founded a branch of the charity Covenant House called Running Wild in the Night.

Interesting note about the video, it was shot in the famous LA landmark Whisky a Go Go, keep your eyes open for a cameo by Sam Kinison who plays the bands driver.

When I need a kickstart, I’ll just drink some coffee or listen to some Motley Crüe. May your hearts never need a kickstart and not stop for a good long while!

Have a great three day weekend!

See ya on the “B” side.
