New releases this week include Cowboys and Aliens and The Smurfs.

Let’s start with Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens. This much anticipated film premiered at San Diego Comic-Con. Starring Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and James Bond (Daniel Craig), Cowboys and Aliens is set in the old west, where a group of lawmen is the only thing that stands in the way of alien domination. Highlights from the trailer include, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and big explosions. We have seen that Favreau can direct action, but according to his interview at Comic-Con, he did his best to keep the old west feel and “just added aliens”.  The early reviews of this one are mixed but I expect this one to be enjoyable, if not a bit cheesy. It should be a summer popcorn flick, not to be taken seriously, but allowed to take you for a ride. I may check this one out, but will remember to leave my disbelief at the door.

Also in theaters this week is the mixed animation/live action The Smurfs. The Smurfs is a cartoon I remember fondly from my childhood and I believe this is the nostalgia that the filmmaker hopes to tap into for this release. There are some big names in the voice cast for The Smurfs, including Jonathan Winters, Katie Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin, Keenan Thompson, Jeff Foxworthy, John Oliver, Wolfgang Puck, Paul Rubins and B.J. Novak. Playing live action characters; Hank Azaria as Gargamel, Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays.  I was excited about this when I first heard about it, but as images and trailers were released, my interest has faded. I’m going to pass on The Smurfs.
